CUCrC Team Racing

Esther Sidebotham & Katie de Lange 2015 Nationals

Sailing is one of the oldest sports of the University. The Cambridge University Cruising Club (CUCrC) (opens in a new window) was formed in 1893. Just 19 years later, in 1912, sailing became a Universities sport with the organisation of the first Varsity Match against Oxford University. The 'Cuppers' inter-college team racing competition started in 1924. Half Blues were awarded for Team Racing from 1937, and discretionary Full Blues since 1982. Team Racing continues to be the major inter-university sailing activity in the UK, using Firefly dinghies. Windsurfing and Yachting competitions have joined Team Racing in more recent years, and each has achieved Half Blue status. A good general history of team racing will be found on the Wikipedia team racing page (opens in a new window).

Team Racing is a major section of the CUCrC (visit the Dinghy Sailing page if you are interested in fleet racing and RYA training). The section's squad consists of three or more mixed teams, each competing on the University and Open circuit, in the British Universities Sailing Association (BUSA) Championships, and a Ladies team which competes in select events. Training takes place two or three times per week in our two flights of Firefly dinghies at Grafham Water. We also contest a Varsity Match, of course - at a coastal location in early July.

Cambridge teams have always been amongst the best university teams in the country, winning BUSA regularly and rarely failing to reach at least the quarter-finals in recent years. Cambridge finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th in 2017 BUSA - a performance never equalled by any other university. Only the record of the legendary team of 1999-2000, which won BUSA and the UKTRA National Championships in 2000, remains to be challenged. Cambridge Ladies came 2nd at their BUSA in 2017.

Cambridge hosts an annual team racing event, the Cam Cup, during the Lent Term (usually early March). Entries are by invitation only - to the best alumni and university teams in the country. Further details are on The Cam Cup page.

The annual Varsity Match against Oxford is sailed in three-man keel boats, at a different coastal venue each year. Recent hosts include Royal Lymington YC, Itchenor SC, Hayling Island SC, the Island SC, Royal London YC, and Royal Southern YC. A short history of the Varsity Match will be found on the Varsity Match Information page of this website.

In 2014 a match racing event was initiated at the Royal Southern YC, with Cambridge winning and Oxford taking the 'second strings' match. The first Varsity Match in 1912 was also a match race, but contest became team racing in the following and subsequent years.
